Electric Locks for MHV

We've got permission to change the locks at Ginninderra House as long as we provide ACTPG with access.

JT has sourced some door strikes for us - PADDE ES2000 - they can be configured as fail open or fail closed individually. They are in the filing drawers upstairs.

Now we just need people to make it happen :) Add your name below and get started.

There are three doors, one to each workshop and the upstairs main door. Upstairs also has a security screen.

The gate is probably too hard, but if you can think of a solution, great!

The roller doors could also have electric motors added…

People have been talking about making them RFID activated.

It may also be a possibility of using the RFID for other things, such as activating tools after inductions (that require them), etc.

  • connect an arduino/RasPi to the striker downstairs for testing
  • purchase a heftier door knob (so the tongue can withstand kicks on the door) with an external key barrel that's keyed for our existing keys
  • install shielding around the door where the tongue enters the striker so that it can't be shimmed (I'm pretty sure this is how people were breaking in)
  • install a knock detector on the door so we can trigger alarms if someone kicks the door


One of the (PADDE ES2000) strikers has been installed in the jam of the large workshop's working door. It's configured to fail-secure/power-to-open.

Upstairs door strike is 18cm x 2.5cm I haven't measured the downstairs ones yet.

After doing a bit of research it seems that 13.56MHz will be the way to go (happy to wrong on this point :P) as such, I have ordered some things for prototyping (and worse case, just for me to have a play around with and learn more).

My thoughts behind sticking with the MiFare type system (which uses 13.56MHz) is that people would have a choice about what kind of fob they carry around (card / keychain / implant? / etc). It may be possible to have a different frequency system use different fobs too, but so far everywhere I've looked (other hackerspaces, etc) has been using 13.56MHz. Both the chips also support NFC, so people with NFC in their phone could even just register the phone and use it.

I'm not sure which is going to be the better option. As I haven't done anything with Arduino yet, I don't know of it's strengths, and perhaps more important in this project, it's limitations.

The RasPi would allow us to do all sorts of things, such as;

  • Auto Tweet space open (link to space probe??)
  • Email (see above re: space probe)
  • IRC (tie into bradfield?)
  • Potentially tie into the alarm system via serial connection (although we may not want to go there at all)
  • Tie back to central database (perhaps store induction information too; ie. bwayne has done the lasercutter induction, so the RFID on the lasercutter will allow him to arm the cutter (if we use RFID to control access as briefly mentioned on IRC))
  • many things I haven't thought of…

It may be possible to do these things with the Arduino, I have no idea (/me ardunio noob).

Option 3: (Beagle Bone) Given the costs of ethernet shields for the Arduino bumping the overall price up into the range of a RasPi / Beagle Bone; it's likely this is the way I'll go (please offer up opinions! :P). This option would offer the same as the RasPi one too.
